M.Gorky's book is the story of a movement in Russia during the second half of the 19th century to the begining of the 20th century.The story of the common people against autocratic czar and the capitalists.It is about a family's life surviving in a time like this and fighting for revolution.This novel tells the story of a mother supporting her son fight for the rights of the people.I am very interested in socialism and its literary history, but I did not like this book very much. Wonderfully written and engaging (as was Gorky's autobiographical writing - though I've only read the first of his three autobiographical works, My Childhood), this book is probably more socially relevant than it has been for a while, as we move into an epoch where individuals who try to stand up for themselves areA moving story about the mother of a working class hero, who is drawn into her son's fight for dignity and fair wages at a plant operated by an oppressive and elite managerial regime.

Like a mother, she loves and grieves for him but quickly takes to her new life of action. I was delighted to read it, expecting to be in the same lineage as the Tolstoys and other Dostoevsky. Although known principally as a writer, he was closely associated with the tumultuous revolutionary period of his own country. They weren’t striking? Clumsily written, without range or subtlety, characterization non-existent. Unless you are a sentimental softy or someone with socialist sympathies (or both), this book is not for you. The mother of a revolutionary becomes a revolutionary. He accepts this hardship stoically. "Mothers are hardly ever pitied." Pavel's friend Andrey is invited to live with the family. she becomes an epitome of courage, strength and truth.

Some time ago, this book was in my library. Not my favourite Russian novel to date.So much to say about this amazing novel! In her attempt she comes to love the comrades with whom she gets acquainted and does her best to take the new ideas of awakening everywhere.Read as part of a group read.
